The IAYC Community Service Initiative “One step at a time” is well underway! After the success of implementing the first phase in 12 schools and community centres across the kingdom; the National Centre for Culture and Arts (NCCA) supported by UNICEF and USAID as part of the USAID Civic Initiatives Support Program and in collaboration with the Ministry of Education is implementing the initiative for a second consecutive year; ensuring a wide access to schools and community centres.

Emanating from the International Arab Youth Congress under the directives of Her Majesty Queen Noor Al Hussein. “One Step at a Time” encourages and empowers Jordanian youth aged 13 to 17 to actively participate as a generation of responsible citizens in community service projects that are creative and sustainable.

After disseminating the initiative’s criteria for participation amongst schools and community centres in all governorates and receiving the submitted applications, an evaluation committee comprising of experts in the field of education, civic engagement and arts selected 36 project ideas that best comply with the initiative’s objectives.

The 36 winning teams received trainings by NCCA theatre experts and NHF –Community Development Program; assisting them to plan phases of project implementation, develop their communication and presentation skills utilizing Theatre-based techniques and promote their confidence and self-esteem to become active agents for change. All projects have been filmed and documented in a creative manner.

In celebration and recognition of youth making a difference in their local communities, a national artistic event will be conducted on May 2, 2016 at the Palace of Culture in Amman.

During the event, participants from 12 governorates will have the opportunity to publicly present their community service projects to an audience of 2000 members accompanied by a documentary and artistic performances from local artists.

Students will also be invited to join delegations from different countries and present their projects in the 35th International Arab Youth Congress (IAYC), which will be held under the patronage of Her Majesty Queen Noor Al Hussein in August 2016 thus driving social change and inspiring others to follow suit.
